Chemicals
Systemic Improvements
POSCO has established and operates a comprehensive monitoring system at each steelworks to ensure the safe transportation, use, and disposal of chemicals throughout the entire process.
In accordance with the Act on the Registration and Evaluation of Chemical Substances, we have completed the registration of all chemicals currently manufactured or imported in quantities of 100 tons or more per year. We also plan to register and manage chemicals handled in quantities below 100 tons per year by the statutory deadline. In addition, we comply with safety standards for chemical handling facilities and are continuously enhancing safety through facility improvements, including the installation of leak detection systems. Since 2016, we have implemented a location tracking system for chemical transport vehicles tailored to the specific conditions of our steelworks, enabling rapid response in the event of an accident.

Chemical Accident Prevention
POSCO implements a range of measures to prevent chemical accidents and minimize their potential impact.
We have established a comprehensive emergency response system to ensure the safety of facilities handling hazardous chemicals and to respond promptly in the event of an incident. To further enhance our preparedness, we conduct regular chemical accident drills and safety training for employees. At the Pohang and Gwangyang Works, dedicated chemical management departments oversee site-level safety, with more than 50 appointed chemical managers. To strengthen early response capabilities, we operate specialized disaster prevention vehicles and a Safety and Disaster Prevention Center staffed with trained professionals. We also conduct joint drills with public authorities and hold regular internal fire drills to ensure readiness. As a leading member of the local chemical safety network, we support the safety efforts of small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) and actively participate in regional chemical safety committees to promote local safety governance.
